The Biblical Story and Folklore in Nativity Sets

Special Guest: Jerry Beavers
Wednesday, December 5, 2018
6:00 p.m. in the Chapel

Nativity sets, also called creches, are three dimensional representations of the birth of Christ. In recent years they have become popular as devotional aids and Advent decorations. This illustrated lecture will help you understand the history and symbols of nativity sets, and how different cultures have portrayed Jesus’ birth. The program will deepen your appreciation of nativity sets, and it will be a wonderful preparation for your enjoyment of the Nativity Exhibit in the Chapel, December 12 – 19.

Rev. Dr. Jerry Beavers is a collector, scholar, and educator. He is a retired Presbyterian Minister who taught at Muskingum University in Ohio for many years. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Princeton Seminary, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, his collection of over 250 nativities has been gathered from over 50 countries.
