January 25, 2026. Third Sunday after Epiphany. Year A.
“Immediately they left their nets and followed him,” Matthew says (v. 20). The phrase appears again in verse 22, “Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.” Jesus’ call inspires prompt responses from the first disciples. On one hand, we can imagine the disciples being bored with their small town fishing villages and eager for adventure. On the other, commercial fishing ain’t that bad a way to spend a life. Maybe what’s really going on is that Jesus’ voice is so compelling, and the adventure to which he calls us is so fresh, new, and inspiring that when we truly hear his clarion call we can’t imagine responding any other way.
