January 18, 2026. Second Sunday after Epiphany. Year A.
In the second Servant Song, Isaiah discloses God’s intentions for post-exilic Israel to be “a light to the nations.” More specifically, God’s concern is for the returning exiles to focus their mission not merely on the recovery and reestablishment of their own tribes, but on being visible witnesses of God’s justice and freedom on behalf of a watching world. On this MLK, Jr. weekend, we recall how prophetic communities have embodied Isaiah’s vision. We’ll also recall the early Baptists’ dreams of a visible church and what that means for us today.
