February 18, 2024. First Sunday in Lent. Year B.
God’s reaffirmation of the covenant now expands to include all flesh. Even more, we hear God express aloud an earlier sentiment that he would “never again curse the ground because of humankind” (8:21). The rainbow in the clouds will serve as an everlasting sign that God has retired from the business of retribution, and will now assume a posture of grace. From now on, no matter what wickedness human beings contrive, they cannot break God’s everlasting covenant.
